Integration

Question 2 from 13: « back | next »
2. How do people think about and practice co-existence with the Natives and Paraguayans?
  • Co-existence of different cultures in the Chaco has been relatively friendly and harmonic over the decades. This was due to the peaceful predisposition of the local Natives (Enlhet), and also the immigrating Mennonites from Canada and Russia. Other ethnic groups that have migrated to the area later on, have also proved to be willing to live together on a peaceful basis with other tribes. Growing population however, does place a stress on relationships at present, especially in times of drought, reduced production and jobmarket. The demands on a general cultural learning process of tolerance, are on the increase. Willingness to yield ethnocentric convictions in favor of a workable co-existence, may be prerequisite for the immediate future in the area.
